Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Herbs up to 1 m tall.

Stems: Stems primarily an underground tuber not elongating much above ground.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ovate, cordate to sagittate–cordate, peltate, 25–45 cm long, 12–32 cm wide, anterior lobe 3–4 times longer than posterior lobes, posterior lobes connate ⅓–¾ their length. Lower surfaces glaucescent. Veins dark purple to yellow on lower surface, green on upper surface, primary lateral veins 3–8 per side. Petioles terete (cylindrical), sheathed in basal 1⁄2, 40–180 cm long, green, green splotched with purple, or purple, fading to pink near base. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences 2–7 together, peduncles 15–50 cm long; spathe linear-lanceolate, (10–)15–40 cm long, constricted 4– 6 cm from base to form a greenish, oblong tube, the limb deflexed, yellowish; spadix exserted, ¼–⅓ as long as spathe, 6–14 cm long, pistillate portion up to 2.5 cm long, sterile staminate portion constricted, 1.5–5 cm long, fertile staminate portion 2–4 cm long, with a shorter and narrower sterile appendage. Flowers unisexual, naked. Calyx absent. Corolla (petals) absent. Staminate flowers with 3–6 connate stamen forming a truncate synandrium. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), 3–4-carpellate, 1-celled; ovules numerous, on parietal placentas; stigma capitate.

Fruit: Berries ellipsoid; 3–5 mm in diameter. Seeds ovoid; 1.2–1.5 mm long; 0.7–1 mm wide.

Uses and Culture

USES

  • A staple food originally brought by the early Polynesians settlers. Corms are mashed and eaten like mashed potatoes, called Po'i. Other parts of the plant are also edible when cooked.

  • Purple/red dye made from the sap of the poni kalo

  • Single most important food plant to Polynesians, early Hawaiians grew 300 varieties, mainly grown for poi production. Poi is produced by steaming (in an underground oven or imu), then mashing and adding water. Also used in religious rituals, as medicine, as bait for 'opelu fishing, for gluing kapa pieces together, & as a red dye for kapa (Handy et al. 1972:111–117).

  • There are numerous varieties of kalo, some if which are favored over others in medicinal treatments. These include kalo lauloa, kalo ‘api‘i, kalo mana, kalo hāpu‘u ke‘oke‘o, kalo uahiapele, kalo manini,kalo ‘apuwaike‘oke‘o, kalo haokea mana, and kalo pi‘iali‘i (Chun 1994:134). Abbott notes that the cut end of a petiole used to stop wounds from bleeding; stem leaf rubbed on insect bites to prevent swelling & pain; juice consumed to reduce fever. Only uncooked flesh of corm was used in medicines. Raw scrapings from kalo corms were mixed with the juices of kō(sugarcane, Saccharum officinarum) and other plants, the mixture then pounded, and the juices squeezed out for ingestion (Abbott 1992:101).

  • All parts of the plant contain calcium oxalate crystals that cause physical irritation, but preparation and cooking renders the crystals harmless.
